Founding members
Jeff L. Horton and David G. Johnstone view the ongoing project of Silmica as
a continuing, grand musical experiment. Whether creating and playing
traditional hard rock, grooving out to improvised progressive “math music”
or shaking the earth with ground breaking electric rave/techno-like
pulsations. Silmica is not afraid to take on whatever musical endeavor it
feels pertinent to its existence and set a course for it with all
seriousness. These are but a few of the musical goals that Silmica views
most important its overall growth.
The musical background known as Silmica has for over 15 years occupied most
of Jeff and David free time and resources. The collective of musicians under
the Silmica banner are always looking for new ways to improve, expand, and
experiment with Silmica old and new repertoire. If any musician in the group
puts forth new ideas, they are considered. If they work, that’s great. If
they don’t, they are discarded for other avenues of pursuit. This technique
of learning and adapting has been part of the group philosophy and
maturation since day one when Jeff and David met in high school in 1987.
The early days of Silmica saw two high school kids learning their craft in
Jeff’s parent’s basement, and later with early progressive rock cover bands.
While both founding members of the band have taken to different outside
projects, both have never admitted that Silmica has ever officially “broken up”.
Indeed, the idea and essence of Silmica is to search out the unique,
interesting, certainly musical, and sometimes bizarre aspects of life, even
if that means adapting a “non-Silmica” attitude for a time.
Silmica, as Jeff and David, or as the collective group, draw on
inspiration in its life for the essence and creation of music. Electronics
and technology have always played a big part of the Silmica sound. On the
surface comparisons could be made to other, well-known bands. These
superficial entities are things that Silmica both as a band and individuals
tries to avoid. Silmica goal is to create and play completely free and
original music and sound composition.
These goals are not only dear to the heart of the group, they are essential!
